What Is the 6-8 +/- Performance Indicator?
Water polo's first individual plus/minus metric: your impact on a game, whatever the final score.
The 6-8 +/- Performance Indicator (PI) is water polo's first individual plus/minus metric. It measures each athlete's impact on the game, whatever their team's final score. Players earn plus points for goals (G), assists (A), steals (ST), blocks (B), earned exclusions (EE), earned penalties (EP) and saves (SV, goalies), and lose points for turnovers, exclusions, penalty fouls and missed shots. Each action is weighted using input from college and professional coaches. The higher the number, the more that player helped their team. The PI is not divided by minutes played. The adjusted PI is based on time in the water and the ranking of the opponent.
The PI uses stats from the 6-8 Game Desk and from individual game scoring in the 6-8 Mobile App.
PI in this game. Open a game in the 6-8 Mobile App to see PI in this game: every player in the game who has stats, ranked by PI. A PI above 0 shows in green with a plus sign, a PI below 0 in red with a minus sign, and 0.00 in grey. When only one player in the game has stats, there is no ranking for that game.
Tony and Maggie built the formula after talking with top US college coaches about what they look for in a player. They combined that with their own knowledge and playing experience.
