What Does My +/- Performance Indicator Mean?
1.5 or above is a positive game. 3 or above is a great game.
The 6-8 Performance Indicator (PI) is water polo's first individual plus/minus metric, and it measures each athlete's impact on the game whatever their team's final score. Players earn plus points for goals (G), assists (A), steals (ST), blocks (B), earned exclusions (EE), earned penalties (EP) and saves (SV, goalies), and lose points for turnovers, exclusions, penalty fouls and missed shots. Each action is weighted using input from college & professional coaches. All of it adds up to one 6-8 PI score: the higher the number, the more that player helped their team. Defenders, especially 2M defenders, tend to score lower than attackers, so their scores should be read with position in mind. These are not divided by minutes played, but rather consider the overall impact on the game. The adjusted PI is based on time in water & the ranking of your opponent.
| PI score | What it means |
|---|---|
| 1.5 or above | Positive game |
| 3 or above | Great game |
The ranges are updated regularly based on worldwide trends. Defenders should compare with the range for their position.
In the 6-8 Mobile App, a PI above 0 shows in green with a plus sign and a PI below 0 shows in red with a minus sign. A PI below 0 means the player's negative stats outweighed the positive ones in that game.
